Helminth Parasites of the Raccoon (Procyon lotor), Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana), and striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) 35 Introduction Although the helminth fauna of the raccoon (Pro-cyon lotor), Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) and striped skunk (Mephitis mephitis) is fairly well known, great gaps exist in our knowledge concerning the distribution of helminths of these hosts throughout North America. This study reports on the helminth fauna of these furbearers from western Nebraska, specifically Keith County. This region is particularly interesting relative to the geographic distribution of the helminths of furbearers because little information exists concerning the helminth parasites of these hosts from the western Great Plains. Lying just east of the Rocky Mountains, the western Great Plains offers a unique epizootiologi-cal setting and approaches the western-most boundary of the opossum and raccoon in the eastern United States (Lowery, 1974; Sealander, 1979). The striped skunk is more ubiquitously distributed (Lowery, 1974). Durden and Richardson (2013) reported on the ectoparasites of these raccoons, opossums, and skunks.

21 Introduction The ectoparasites associated with Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana), raccoons (Procyon lotor) and striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) have been reported from several regions within the United States. For example , ectoparasites of opossums have previously been However, there are relatively few records of ectoparasites of wild mammals from Nebraska and no detailed studies o...
متن کاملPrevalence of agglutinating antibodies to Sarcocystis neurona in skunks (Mephitis Mephitis), raccoons (Procyon lotor), and opossums (Didelphis Virginiana) from Connecticut.
Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis is the most important protozoan disease of horses in North America and is usually caused by Sarcocystis neurona. Natural cases of encephalitis caused by S. neurona have been reported in skunks (Mephitis mephitis) and raccoons (Procyon lotor). Opossums (Didelphis spp.) are the only known definitive host. Sera from 24 striped skunks, 12 raccoons, and 7 opossums ...
متن کاملModest genetic differentiation among North American populations of Sarcocystis neurona may reflect expansion in its geographic range.
Sarcocystis neurona is an important cause of neurological disease in horses (equine protozoal myeloencephalitis, EPM) and sea otters in the United States. In addition, EPM-like disease has been diagnosed in several other land and marine mammals. Opossums are its only definitive hosts. Little genetic diversity among isolates of S. neurona from different hosts has been reported. Here, we used 11 ...

?Inhaled isoflurane is one of many chemical immobilizing agents available for field anesthesia of wildlife. We examined the use of inhaled isoflurane for field immobilization of mesopredators. Five species of mammals were anesthetized in a wetland complex in south-central Nebraska with isoflurane; we developed an induction chamber to use with a portable anesthesia machine to provide anesthesia ...
متن کاملDiversity, seasonality, and context of mammalian roadkills in the southern Great Plains.
Thousands of mammals are killed annually from vehicle collisions, making the issue an important one for conservation biologists and environmental managers. We recorded all readily identifiable kills on or immediately adjacent to roads in the southern Great Plains from March 2004-March 2007. We also recorded distance traveled, whether a road was paved or divided, the number of lanes, and prevail...
